Terra Sigillata // 4-day workshop with Bert draait door

This workshop is designed for anyone intrigued by traditional clay-working techniques. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced ceramic artist, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the beauty of Terra Sigillata and learn the meditative process of working with clay . Experience the natural results of this ancient technique while connecting with nature and like-minded individuals in a warm, welcoming environment.

With Terra Sigillata you use clay from beginning to finish. No glazes are necesarry. Terra Sigillata is a clay slip made of ultrafine clay particles. You can use it to coat raw pots or immerse them in it. In the past, it wasn't possible to reach the high firing temperatures we have today. To make pottery more or less sealed, very fine clay particles were used.

  • Day 1 & 2 Creating Your Pieces
You’ll spend two days working on the pottery wheel or handbuilding your pieces. Bert, an experienced teacher in wheel throwing, will offer personalized guidance, helping you refine your skills and create your unique designs.

  • Day 2 & 3 : Finishing your pieces. Making and applying Terra Sigillata
After forming your pieces, you’ll learn the art of polishing and finishing your work to perfection.
You’ll also learn how to make Terra Sigillata, a clay slip made from ultrafine clay particles, and apply it to your ceramic pieces for a beautiful, natural finish.

  • Day 4: Firing
On the final day, we come together to fire the pots using traditional methods, constructing a paper kiln. We also smoke the pots, achieving beautiful, one-of-a-kind results for your ceramic pieces. Imagine the rich, blackened earthenware seen in many African cultures, with its distinctive smoky finish.

All skill levels are welcome. Whether you’re just starting out or have experience with ceramics, this workshop provides a welcoming space for you to explore, create, and connect.
